Project Idea Day LEATHER DICE BAGS

7/4/2022

The business of crafting an ideal leather dice bag is more than just the bag, it’s about the customer enjoyment of holding and using the bag. Also, a really good dice bags has the feeling of satisfaction when the draw strings magically closes.

Making a batch of 6 dice bag gave me many learnings.
  • On average it takes 57 mins and 30 seconds to make one.
  • Cost to manufacture is around $39.
  • Soft leather works best.
  • Shoe laces cost more the synthetic core, however the laces are faster to lace, therefore cost less overall when you consider time.
  • The order of construction can improve the overall quality.

Project Idea Day LEATHERWORK WATCH STRAPS

LEATHERWORK WATCH STRAPS Project Idea Day project.
Christchurch has a number of very skilled leather craft professionals. Do I have the skills to recreate a leather watch strap with the same style  and colour as the original? Could I turn this in to a business?

On the day, I produced a replacement watch strap and learnt a number of things I could have done better; choosing a leather a little to thick causes problems and have a few more leather craft tools would have helped.

Next step, to consider the business idea of crafting and selling leather dice bags and little leather bracelets.

KOMBUCHA COCKTAILS Project Idea Day project.
Extending the kombucha idea from last week, why not add some New Zealand gin’s to the kombucha to make Kombucha Cocktails.

Originally I assumed kombucha was for a market of people looking for a non-alcohol drink.
No, research shows kombucha alcohol range is strong in New Zealand and internationally.

Sophie and I both found this an interesting project, however we are unlikely to move this one forward any further.

KOMBUCHA WITH A TWIST Project Idea Day project.
A lot of business ideas come from the kitchen. Someone has a passion for a food style or beverage flavour that they want to share with the world.
For a while I did home brewing, so the concept of making an interesting drink was sparked when drinking my sister-in-laws home  made kombucha, a tea-based drink. The world wide industry in 2014 was $1 million and has grown in sales to $1.8 billion in 2019.
What flavour could I add to kombucha to sell to the public? The market maybe flooded, however a unique flavour could be key to success; was initially thinking berries, turmeric and beetroot.

Project Idea Day - THE SINGING BARBER

THE SINGING BARBER is the second Project Idea Day project.
Had a business idea based around a simple point of difference, live singing while you get your haircut!

Basically you need a barber haircut, I'll sing to you as I cut!

Feedback, people just want a hair cut, not interested in the singing part, and my singing needs improving.

The idea was so bad, I haven't done a
One Page Lean Canvas for this business idea.

Project Idea Day - TOUR WITH US

9/2/2022

TOUR WITH US is the first Project Idea Day project.

Bike touring from St Albans to Kaiapoi on the new cycle path. We contemplate what customers would pay for a 4 hour return trip with lunch and a guided tour. After completing the One Page Lean Canvas, we realised existing bike hire groups in Christchurch could just add this tour as part of their offering and therefore we have no unfair advantage.

Project Idea Day, was a result of wanting to document the 5th day of
    4-day working week. Hoping to
      •  inspire others to work a 4-day working week.
      •  take project ideas around different business ventures and contemplating their viability.

If you could work a 4-day working week, what would you do with the extra day?

Note, testRUN New Zealand Ltd finished trading in 2022.
